Farmers Need Mental Health Resources—Now More Than Ever

Apr 17, 2025 | FCSC Blog, Industry Insights

Farming and agricultural production are rewarding and essential professions—but they’re not without their challenges. At Farm Credit of Southern Colorado, we understand the complexities and uncertainties our farmers and producers navigate, and we’re here to support them every step of the way.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the significant impact that mental health challenges can have on farmers and ranchers. Factors like extreme weather, fluctuating market prices, and trade disruptions contribute to stress, especially for those in isolated rural areas.

“A farmer or rancher’s mental health is paramount. Just as they keep their finger on the pulse of commodity markets or weather trends, they should regularly evaluate the gauge of their own wellbeing,” says Jennifer Meis, VP of Business Development at Farm Credit of Southern Colorado.

Farmers are the backbone of our communities, and they deserve access to vital mental health resources. Unfortunately, many hesitate to seek help due to the expectations surrounding generational farms and the stigma associated with mental health issues. This can have serious consequences, as farming is linked with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide.

“In an industry laden with stress and uncertainty, it’s critical to have tools and resources readily available to support their mental and emotional health,” Meis adds.

In Colorado, the AgriStress Helpline® offers a free, confidential crisis support line available 24/7. Staffed by trained professionals who understand the unique challenges in agriculture, the helpline can provide much-needed support and connect farmers to mental health resources.
