We are excited to share our recent volunteer opportunity here in Colorado Springs with Pikes Peak United Way (PPUW) and Brothers Redevelopment! This week, on August 20th, our Culture Club and FCSC volunteers partnered with PPUW and Brothers Redevelopment for a local Paint-A-Home project for a well-deserving Colorado Springs resident to give back to our community and make a positive impact together. We spent the day working together to re-paint a home to help get this resident back on their feet to live in a home they’re proud of. We had such a blast painting, knowing that we were helping a widow who lost her husband and spent her time helping others, putting them first before herself.
Brother’s Redevelopment, a nonprofit that provides home repair and other services to seniors and disabled people in Colorado, believes in the same values as PPUW and Farm Credit of Southern Colorado. This project is part of a global effort to improve communities and assist neighbors in need, so we couldn’t be prouder to lend a helping hand. This year’s paint-a-home day, we were aligned with Pikes Peak United Way’s campaign to improve the quality of life for our entire community, starting with recipient Joy Hicks.
Here’s Joy’s Story:
Joy Hicks is a lovely woman who lives alone in her longtime COS home of over 51 years. Her husband passed away over 15 years ago, and his death caused her significant grief. When she is out and about, she loves to drive by the houses he helped build around Colorado Springs as a construction framer. She worked in the home, raising their children and providing in-home childcare services in her home. During the initial estimate, her great-granddaughter from Montana was spending the week of Spring Break with her, and they both loved the time together. Since the death of her husband, she has been unable to care for her home the way that he did. She would love to spend the day with a caring and compassionate volunteer team protecting and restoring the beauty of her house.
Our Culture Club enjoyed every minute of our day of painting and couldn’t be happier in knowing what impact we made in Joy’s life. Thank you to Pikes Peak United Way and Brothers Redevelopment for allowing FCSC to assist this past week!
