At Farm Credit of Southern Colorado, we proudly wear the BioStar as part of our identity—but it represents far more than a design choice. It tells the story of who we are, where we’ve been, and our continued commitment to farmers, ranchers, and rural communities across Southern Colorado.

Our Roots: A Cooperative Built for Agriculture

The Farm Credit System began in 1916, when Congress passed the Federal Farm Loan Act to create a nationwide network of cooperatively owned lending institutions. Farmers and ranchers needed reliable access to credit—something many banks at the time weren’t offering. The solution was a borrower-owned system built by and for agriculture.

Over the decades, the Farm Credit System expanded, adapting to meet the growing and changing needs of rural America. But in its early years, there was no consistent visual identity across the network.

The Road to the BioStar

In 1963, an effort was made to unify Farm Credit’s identity through a color-coded set of logos. Each of the System’s three main functions had its own mark:

  • Blue for the Federal Land Banks and Federal Land Bank Associations
  • Red for the Production Credit Associations
  • Gold for the Banks for Cooperatives

These oval-shaped logos helped define who we were for a time. But the Farm Crisis of the 1980s tested agriculture—and the Farm Credit System—like never before. Amid those struggles came a renewed push for a stronger, more unified identity.

That moment gave rise to a powerful new symbol.

A Lasting Symbol of Trust

Now, nearly 40 years later, the BioStar remains a trusted emblem for our cooperative—and a constant reminder of our purpose. At Farm Credit of Southern Colorado, we operate with the same core values that have defined Farm Credit for more than a century.

We are customer-owned, meaning our customers are also our members. Through good years and tough seasons, that cooperative structure has remained our greatest strength. It keeps us grounded in your success and committed to reinvesting in agriculture.

From farmland and equipment loans to operating lines of credit and crop insurance, our work continues to support producers across Southern Colorado—and the BioStar stands as a symbol of that enduring mission.

When You See the BioStar…

…you’re seeing more than a brand. You’re seeing:

  • A legacy of service to rural communities
  • A cooperative promise to our customer-owners
  • A vision for the future of agriculture

We’re proud to carry that symbol—and prouder still to serve those who feed, fuel, and sustain the world.
